AT THE PARK CENTRAL, HISTORY IS "MADE"

Lots of properties claim to have celebrities shacking up in their penthouse suites, but how many can boast a real HIT? Such was the fate for Albert Anastasia (1902-1957), best known as the one time head of the Gambino crime family. Anastasia was a self-made man - self-made in the sense that his ruthless brutality effectively launched and lead his career as a lucrative mobster from the tender age of 13 until his untimely death at the age of 55.

Anastasia was a brilliant criminal with a laundry list of successful endeavors. He demonstrated an unparalleled ability to quell the rebellious instincts of defiant Mafioso, winning the respect of distinguished, influential gangsters such as Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, Frank Costello ("The Prime Minister of Organized Crime") and Al Capone from the get-go. He was the obvious choice to run Murder Inc., a service developed to keep wayward gangsters in line, and was granted entrance and leading control of the Mangano family, despite gripes from others who felt more justified in managing the family.

Don Vito Genovese, the most boisterous "other," did not let sleeping dogs lie, and created an intricate scheme to malign Anastasia in the eyes of the other crime families.

Anastasia's well-documented routine made the hit easy. Around 10 in the morning on October 25, 1957, Albert Anastasia strolled into the barbershop of the Park Sheraton Hotel, now known as the Park Central. He sat down in one of the pinkish colored chairs, closed his eyes and reclined. Anastasia's chauffer conveniently left his boss right after the hot towel went on his face. The barber began to clip his hair. Two men wearing fedoras, sunglasses and overcoats, walked into the barbershop and drew revolvers from inside their heavy coats. The two men motioned the barber away from the chair with the barrel of their guns. Anastasia sensed something was wrong. He quickly sat up in the chair. He removed the white towel from his face. The gunmen proceeded to pump bullets into Anastasia's arm, chest and back. Anastasia succumbed to the continuous barrage of bullets. He fell on his back next to the chair, amidst his own hair clippings.

With the murder of Anastasia, the reign of one of the most unpredictable bosses ever to run a crime family in New York came to an end.
