August is all over the city map serving up things to do this month. From tip to tail and beyond, there’s plenty of reasons to step outside the normal hood and explore.
Governors Island
For the 19th year in a row, Governors Island transports visitors into the Jazz Age for two days for their annual Jazz Lawn Party. Dress the part in flapper dresses of flowing material, feathers, flat caps, wingtips, and loose pleated trousers. Live music by Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra, plenty of dance floors, vintage photobooth and vendors, Pétanque, carnival games, and more. Event is fast approaching and tickets are going fast, August 10-11. Make sure to arrange your ferry rides!
Citywide
Enjoy car free streets Saturdays this month in Manhattan (August 10, 17), 7am to 3pm. Summer Streets opens the streets for extra space to roam on foot, bike and play with friends and family. Along the route, rest stops host more activities to extend the day: fitness classes, bike rentals, games and food.
Midtown
You scream, we scream, we all scream for ice cream on a hot summer day! East Coast welcomes West Coast with the grand opening of the Ghirardelli Chocolate and Ice Cream Shop in the Empire State Building, August 6th. Founded in San Francisco circa 1852, Ghirardelli has been making premier chocolate in their signature bite size squares. Flight no longer needed to grab one of their World Famous Chocolate Fudge Sundaes and a free sample of chocolate handed out daily.
Lincoln Square
Lincoln Center hosts The Met’s 15th Annual Summer HD Festival. A free, outdoor festival running August 23 – September 2 of classic and contemporary operas. The space in front of the opera house hosts about 3000 seats with other designated areas around Lincoln Center Plaza. Plan ahead and pick your favorites. Rain or shine the only thing shutting this event down is thunder/lightning or high winds.
