White pants may no longer be acceptable after Labor Day, but the city still feels like summer well into September. Keep the summer vibes going while you can. 5 things to do before the summer weather ends.
1. Park Concert/Movie
Entertainment in the park is the top thing to do over the summer with too many open air spaces to list. The season is winding down and there are few still doing viewings in the city:
- Robert Moses Playground – It’s A Bug’s Life (Sept. 20)
- Chelsea Park – Secret Life of Pets (September 26)
- Pier 17 – Too many to list!
2. Willy Wall
ICYMI in July for all the fireworks, grab a ticket and journey to the middle of the bay for views of the Statue of Liberty, Jersey Manhattan and Brooklyn as the sun sets. Catch sailboat races to your left and right as you sip a crisp beverage and listen to the sounds of waves and tunes from the bartender’s playlist.
3. Coney Island
Something about a pier, amusement rides and corn dogs that scream summer days and nights. Channel your inner child or grab the kids, pack a cooler, suits and towels and take the train to Coney Island. Walk by “snake charmers” holding their boa constrictors for photo ops, vendors, or ride the roller coasters and death drops for an adrenaline rush at Luna Park. Finish it off with Nathan’s hot dogs for your own eating competition amongst friends.
4. Smorgasbord
Technically, this food market goes until October but why wait until the last minute to experience an epic food convention of global flavors all in one place? Three days, every week, visit World Trade Center (alternating Thursday/Fridays), Williamsburg (Saturdays), and Prospect Park (Sundays).
5. BBQ
Of course, grilling meat isn’t relegated to summer only. However, nice weather is the best time to BBQ and have peak season vegetables. Before you pack the grill away or put it under cover, invite the friends, marinate the meats, skewer the vegetables and take in the sweet, smokey smells of the end of summer. Head over to Esposito Meat Market for good cuts and knowledgeable butchers.
